When Amber Scott first arrived on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland in 2014, she was told that her dream of turning Kandanga Farm organic would never work in such a high-parasite area. Today, the farm is certified organic.

Kandanga Farm Store specialises in chemical free food production, runs regular workshops and events, helps others set up their own farms, and advocates for regenerative agriculture (RegenAg). Amber knows too well that conventional farming practices in Australia aren’t sustainable. They lead to inefficient production, lack of resilience to extreme weather and reduced connection to land. That’s why she has set up shop to change the face of farming in Australia.

“At Kandanga Farm, we want to make regenerative and organic farming the norm. We want to make our model replicable. Running our own farm successfully shows that it’s achievable,” explains Amber.

RegenAg allows farmers to manage land and food production in a way that supports the ecosystem by improving how it functions and building soil fertility. Kandanga Farm Store’s first challenge in achieving its goal was the lack of precedent. “There was no one to copy – we had to work it out for ourselves,” Amber says.

Today, changing attitudes and telling the story of RegenAg is one of the farm’s biggest challenges. In its early stages, RegenAg also doesn’t have solutions to all farming problems – and distribution is proving to be tricky from the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Its internal operations including the store layout and systems were also holding the team back.

When Amber reached out to Sustainable Table for funding for a website revamp, the team got her in touch with Sefa. Sefa has helped the farm not only get funding ready, but also get clarity around its purpose and how it can move forward with confidence. “Working with Sefa has been a great process. We now know the right language to use and understand our ‘why’. And we realised that we need to get our foundations right first before we do anything else.” That foundation includes a digital platform, new point of sale system, and an interface that creates a more streamlined experience for its online customers. They’re also making sure they can provide a better way of servicing farmers from across the country.

“Thanks to Sefa, I can do what we need to do. I feel more confident to ask for what we need.” - Amber Scott, Owner, Kandanga Farm Store
