Sefa catalyses investment in social purpose and Sefa Partnerships collaborates to bring social innovations to life.

Together, we provide flexible funding, financing and support solutions to social purpose organisations in Australia who want to better understand their impact potential, expand their reach and become more sustainable.

We bring in expertise identifying and addressing the capital and capability needs of social purpose organisations:

  • unlocking access to funding and financing opportunities,

  • strengthening the organisation’s business, financial and impact models for greater confidence and sustainability,

  • testing and refining approaches to deploy the right capital and capability solutions that help SPOs and social investors achieve their impact goals, and

  • facilitating intentional, relevant connections with others in the Australian social economy. 

We champion for the growth of the social purpose sector and the increase of investment in impact across Australia.
Our team comes with robust expertise in social investment, business and support of social purpose organisations, innovation and product and service development, governance and impact measurement.

 
 

What we do at Sefa

Together with Social Purpose Organisations, we identify their needs to determine if we are the best partner for them.

If we are, we discuss a range of solutions (capital, capital/capability, capability), why we think these solutions are the best for them at this stage, and what they can expect as a result at the end of their journey.
We work closely, as partners with Social Purpose Organisations, leverage their strengths, providing business, strategy and governance support to uplift confidence and sustainability.
We evaluate Social Purpose Organisations against their capital needs to match them with the right capital
We assess how introductions to other Social Purpose Organisations, social investors and philanthropic organisations could further opportunities for Social Purpose Organisations, and we facilitate introductions among our network of allies.

If we are, we identify social investors’ impact goals and work with them to create the capital and capability solutions that have the greatest potential for impact.

We attract investment for social impact in Australia through our role as thought leaders and champions of social purpose organisations.

What we do at Sefa Partnerships

We bring expertise in innovation and product/service development to experiment with Social Purpose Organisations'/social investors' impact potential and introduce social innovation within Sefa's activities.
We provide blended finance and capital collaborations to Social Purpose Organisations, philanthropic organisations and social investors.
We are values-led driven in how we expand our network of social impact investors, innovators, philanthropists, and practitioners.
We connect with those at the forefront of social change to identify pockets of innovation and knowledge that can inform ways in which our capital and capability products and services can better address the needs of Social Purpose Organisations and social impact investors in Australia.

Our Story

Sefa (Social Enterprise Finance Australia) was established in 2011 with a $10 million grant from the Commonwealth Social Enterprise Development and Investment Fund (SEDIF). An additional $10 million was raised via equity investors and lenders. 

To date, Sefa has unlocked close to $140 million of capital from the impact investing sector. The Sefa team has disbursed $45 million in loans through almost 70 deals. 

Sefa’s work continues across impact areas including crisis & affordable housing, education, arts, community enterprises, Indigenous and disability organisations.

Sefa Partnerships was established by Sefa as a public benevolent institution in 2016 to boost the resources available for social purpose organisations supporting disadvantaged communities across Australia. 

Since 2016 Sefa Partnerships has unlocked capital and capability resources for more than 80 social purpose organisations and 100 social changemakers. Their work has helped leverage an additional $2.3 million into the sector for the ongoing development and support of organisations transforming and relieving disadvantage. 

Sefa and Sefa Partnerships work collaboratively and share a strategy: to continue furthering the growth of Social Purpose Organisations across Australia, and to inspire and mobilise investors to unlock further capital and capability opportunities for greater social impact.
